A butter dish that sits as easily on the breakfast table as on a dinner setting — the shell lifted off, butter kept cool in the glass beneath, the small ceremony of a laid table.

Silver plate worked into a scallop shell, with a clear glass insert that holds the butter and lifts out for washing. The plating carries a soft patina that suits the form. Compact at 13 × 13 cm. The shell originally closed on a sprung lid; the push-button mechanism at the back is no longer present, so the shell now rests over the glass as a lift-off cover rather than a latched one. No butter knife is included.

An unmarked piece of Italian silver-plate work from the 1980s, in the decorative shell tradition that runs through European tableware — valued for the form and the weight of the plating rather than a maker's stamp.

Care Instructions

• Polish the silver plate with a soft cloth — never an abrasive
• Lift out the glass insert to wash it separately in warm water
• Dry both parts fully before reassembling to protect the plating
