A large Murano mushroom lamp from the 1980s — the kind of piece that changes a room simply by being on, and holds its own when it isn't.

Hand-blown in Murano by Fabbian for Mazzega, the shade is formed in opaline glass with a softly swirled ribbing that spirals across the dome — a technique that diffuses light evenly and gives the surface a quiet, almost textile quality. The base is chrome, polished to a clean reflective finish. At 50 cm height and 37 cm shade diameter, the proportions are generous without being overstated. Takes a standard E27 bulb. The lamp comes with its original cable, which due to age may require inspection and replacement by a qualified electrician before use.

Fabbian was established in the Veneto in the 1960s and became one of the principal Italian lighting houses of the postwar period, working closely with Murano glassmakers — Mazzega among them — to produce lamps that treated blown glass as the primary design material rather than an ornament. Mazzega, founded in Murano in the early 20th century, was one of the island's most prolific producers of decorative lighting glass in the 1970s and 1980s, supplying designers and manufacturers across Europe.
