A quietly useful object that earns its place at the table — the Mercurio basket holds bread, fruit, or whatever the meal calls for, without asking to be noticed.

Brushed stainless steel with a fine linear texture across the surface. The low, open form lets air circulate and makes the contents easy to reach. At 28 × 20 cm with a 7.5 cm rise, it sits well at the centre of the table without crowding it. The structure is rigid throughout.

Alessi was founded in Omegna, on the shores of Lake Orta, in 1921. Originally a workshop producing brass and nickel silver objects, the house shifted to stainless steel in the 1950s and built its reputation commissioning designers across Europe — Alessandro Mendini, Ettore Sottsass, Richard Sapper — to bring new form to everyday objects. The Mercurio line, produced through the 1980s, sits within that tradition: functional, resolved, and made to outlast the occasion it was designed for.
