A linen-closet find that earns its place between everyday use and the guest room — laid over a rail, folded by a basin, or kept for the table when something a little finer is wanted.

An antique cotton hand towel worked in floral and fleur-de-lys jacquard, with embroidered detail across the cloth. The weave carries a raised pattern that catches light, the motifs running through the body and into the borders. Scalloped edges finish each end by hand. At 60 × 100 cm it is generous for the hand and equally at home in the kitchen or bath.

The quality here is of a kind rarely found now — jacquard and hand embroidery of this depth belonged to an era of household linens woven to last. Italian textiles of this period were trousseau pieces and guest textiles, produced across the workshops of northern Italy through the mid-twentieth century. Cotton jacquard with scalloped borders and fleur-de-lys motifs marked the finest of the domestic ranges, kept and reused across generations.
