White Bavarian porcelain in Hutschenreuther's Lucina shape, with a finely scalloped rim that catches the light at the edge of the table. Each plate measures 25 cm across and weighs around 300 g — substantial enough to hold heat under a plated main. Sold as a pair.

Hutschenreuther, porcelain manufacturers in Bavaria since 1814. Lucina is one of the house's plain white scalloped services, made for daily use rather than display, and this pair dates to the 1970s.

• Undecorated porcelain with no metal trim, so a standard dishwasher cycle is fine
• Stack with a cloth or felt pad between each plate — scalloped rims chip at the edge
• Let a plate come to room temperature before it goes into a hot oven
• Lift cutlery marks with a little bicarbonate on a damp cloth

Looked after, they outlast the service they were bought to fill.
