European Tradition
Italy and France remain the heartland of artisan ceramics and Mediterranean tableware. Italian earthenware endures as maiolica — the hand-painted, tin-glazed pottery of Deruta, Faenza and Montelupo — alongside celebrated Italian houses such as Laveno, whose lakeside potteries have shaped Italian tableware design for over a century, and Fontebasso, producing fine ceramics in the Veneto since 1760. In France, the same craft is known as faïence, from Gien, Nevers and Moustiers, while French stoneware, or grès, comes from the potteries of Alsace and the Beaujolais.

Let pieces cool before washing and never expose them to sudden temperature changes, as thermal shock can cause cracking. Dry thoroughly before stacking, and place a soft cloth between plates and bowls to protect the surface. Cared for simply, these ceramics will last for generations.
